Vernazza

Trekking Vernazza Italy

The territory of Cinque Terre is crossed by a lot of walking trails, hikers can spend a day characterized by nature, along tracks overlooking the sea and enjoying wonderful views.

Two footpaths leave from Vernazza, one towards Monterosso and one towards Corniglia: both of them are part of the Blue trail (Sentiero Azzurro), which connects all Cinque Terre, from Riomaggiore to Monterosso.

  • Vernazza – Monterosso
Difficulty: average; KM 3; approx. 1h45
The footpath leaves from Vernazza, directly from the square in front of the marina, and climbs in the middle of the houses behind the church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia. The first part is demanding, the road rises slowly and steeply among olive groves and gardens. After you have reached the first hill, the town is out of sight, and the path continues level for a long way, crossing the valleys of Cravarla, Fosso Mulinaro and the small one of Acquapendente. Along the way you will cross also a very typical small stone bridge. The last part is made by some steep staircases proceeding downhill towards Monterosso: nearby the village you will meet the last very narrow staircase overlooking the sea. From here you enter into the small seafront leading to the town.

  • Vernazza – Corniglia
Difficulty: low; KM 4; approx. 1h30
The footpath leaves from Vernazza, and reaches in few minutes the second tower of the fortifications. The ascent continues not too much steeply until the small hamlet of Prevo (220 metres above sea level). The path continues with a succession of not difficult ups and downs overlooking the beach of Guvano immersed in cultivated fields, olive groves, vineyards and flowery meadows. Continuing on this trail you will reach the hamlet of san Bernardino, from where, after an easy slope, you will reach the town of Corniglia. The last part is a paved road. Corniglia, even if is a town itself, is part of the municipality of Vernazza.

  • Vernazza – Sanctuary of Madonna di Reggio
Difficulty: low; KM 1,5; approx. 45 minutes
The Sanctuary of Madonna di Reggio, located on the hills behind Vernazza, is visited by numerous tourists, thanks to its century-old beauty immerged in the Ligurian vegetation, as well as by the local believers. This path in fact was born not for practical reasons or for work: at the beginning it was used as Via Dolorosa in order to reach the small church. The path leaves nearby the Railway Station and continues along the mule track leading to the town cemetery. After the cemetery the path, in certain parts paved, leads to the Madonna di Reggio, surrounded by a great square studded of olive trees and century old oak-trees. Along the path it is possible to admire some of the stations representing the various episodes of the Via Dolorosa For other information about the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Reggio you can visit the page “In the surroundings of Vernazza.”
